An Amazing Story

Amazing how a spirit lives, in hope and in true
Grace and
How hard the times can be for some but
Sweet for others who know
The truth.  When the soul can hear a
Sound so pure
That lives through its own Lord, who has
Saved not one life but more. And mine is
A life that could be called a
Wretch, for what I do
Like thousands that have gone before. But
Me, O Lord
I have learned that
Once a man who has lived so wrong,
Was sore at heart and
Lost in kind,
But as never before,
Now he could not live.  "I
Am grieved of this journey, the darkies I
Found to be human and wronged, I
Was evil and turned a
Blind eye to the injustice,
But through Your grace
Now no longer will I ship slaves as
I forthwith in the true light do
See."

John Newton [1725-1807] lived as a religious and prosperous man who as a blackbirder made his fortune in slave-trading. Because of his religion, he knew the trade of man was wrong. Soon after one trip, he was struck not only by the Africans' soulful chanting, but a revelation in the wrong-doing of humankind, and thus, "Amazing Grace" was conceived. If you did not realize what you were reading, I entreat you to go back and read only the first word of each line downward.

Thank you for coming in.

What a very clever poem. I don't know how you did it. I could never do something like this. I bow before you, Sunshine.

A clever piece of poetic work indeed.
This brings to mind an old Stephen Stills song, if you will permit me?

"We are not helpless we are men.
What lies between us,
it can be set aside and ended.
Every day we learn more how to hate.
And tell ourselves we can't relate,
only to the ones who are the same,
Yet even they are different,
and ever so, they shall remain.
All are strangers, all are friends,
all are brothers, all are men."

Sort of a "hippy dippy" view,
but one I cling to in my old age! lol
Thanks.

"The poet is the priest of the invisible."
