Raising my Own Bar

almost
almost a perfectionist
     but not quite
          for if I were
then I would think
you needed to be one, too…

all I want
          is for you to try

so I raise
         my own bar
              one step higher
asking from me one
     more goal
          one more try
one more step
     and don't heed my cries

no, don't heed my cries

for I put me
     where I am today
          by raising the goal
and lifting the bar
and forever still wishing
          on a star

keeping myself
     in line with right
          wearing white
keeping within the one light
          keeping within
                keeping the sight

and still raising my own bar
and reaching for my own stars

I don't ask anything of you
no I couldn't, for I don't have a clue
what it is that makes you tick
and what within you makes you click
but know, please know
that I accept
that hand you reach out to me…

for I have raised a bar today
an inner goal, a "come what may"
a tribute to my other self
the shy that stays
     polished
on my shelf

for the reserve that I once had
is almost gone, has since paused
to allow the me that now comes forth
in search of dreams, in search
of North…

will I ever know myself?
     I don't know, indeed,
I'd rather keep doing as now
and taking up new creed,

for today I did one thing
and shook not, once I entered the ring
then came away, small pride, indeed
and I will go on, and take heed

in the little things that one does
in the growth of you, just because
for in a smile, I see me

and in your gifts, I see we….

Lady:

"for I have raised a bar today
an inner goal, a "come what may"
a tribute to my other self
the shy that stays
     polished
on my shelf"

wonderful strength and growth...leaping out of your words, wonderful!

This poem offers hope to one who has held back due to accepting nothing less than perfection.  Once one lets go of that the possibilities are limitless and "we" will become a reality, as judgement is a non-issue. Loved this as I tend to be one, and I see change there, and it felt good!  Great poem.

A lovely attitude, always moving toward excellence. I had a friend years ago that time has rendered us strangers, but I always felt so sad for one part of her admitted personality.  She said because she was such a perfectionist, she wouldn't try anything unless she felt fully confident that she could accomplish it perfectly.  I  hope maturity has brought her closer to what you have pictured here in this piece.

Lady, keep accepting that hand, and letting the reserve slip away...you will be pleased to do so, and more writing like this is such a bonus.
