From over the fence you looked at me
It was in the summer of '73
A ladder on the fence
Joined your place and mine
Over yonder, past the clothes line

I have a picture I keep of me and you
I'm about four and you're not even two
I'm looking down at you in your pram
Not knowing then what a friendship would grow

So many summers spent swimming in my pool
We'd do anything just to keep ourselves cool
Then we'd scale across the fence
First to your place, then mine
Or we'd lie on our towels
And soak up the sunshine

As our lives took many turns
For better and for worse
Any needs that you had
Would always come first
Life was to be so unfair
So much heartache you'd go through
At times I felt so helpless
Not quite knowing what to do

The loss of your father
At a very young age
Still too young was I
To help you through his difficult stage
But we grew through the hard times
We learnt to have fun
Then a tragedy happened
The loss of your son

Though wiser in years
Still so helpless did I feel
Hoping this was some horrible dream
This just couldn't be real
But it was to be true
And I tried to be there
To hold onto your hand
In your time of despair

Now here we are - six years on
And how much closer we seem
As we talk about our children
And the things for them we dream

So crooked was that road
We had to endure
But we've stayed the best of friends
That's for sure
Life's cards have been dealt
Our friendship ever true
How very blessed was I
The day that I met you

Thanks so much for your kind words James and Bob. My friend for whom I wrote this poem about is one of my best friends and as you can see, we went through a lot together and still are great friends......for me it is a very treasured friendship.  Thank you....Sue.
