Beach Combing With a Friend

The sea makes no promises,
Except to conform us
To its own way of doing things. And so
We come to sense a different kind
Of being.
Progress, like the tide, finds
Meaning
Not so much in forward marching
As in the ebb and flood
That bring us ambling from point to point.
And if voyaging from sand dollar
To urchin
To whatever it is that the seagull has just given up
Pecking
Lacks the romance of celestial navigation,
Know this:
Even the most disparate tracks,
When looking back, suggest some form
Of constellation.

Corinne....no, not really. It's more....(My cocker...Irish Cream...just came up and put his head on my foot. Perhaps he's telling me to refrain from the philosophical).

Wonderful insight!  I loved this.  You've captured the ocean, Bob.

This poem meant a lot to me.  I saw the ocean for the first time last year, and no, it doesn't make promises and the tide never breaks them.  Enjoyed.

Nicely put, Bob, especially the nudge of gentle irony. I'm enjoying your work.
