(the first time I posted this poem I had my son and his wife in mind...although it is not them, just a fictional couple, but now I'm reposting on the day I found out I'm going to be a grandmother!!)

Iced Tea Conception

They were drinking iced tea
at a sidewalk table
where a black lab sprawled
tongue lolling.

She had young long legs,
he, sweet green eyes and a goatee,
they enchanted each other
with a gaze of familiarity
as her ring glinted
and colored a rainbow on the sidewalk.

I want to have a baby
she said
suddenly seriously wiping
the table with her napkin
where a piece of ice
was slowly melting.

Honey…he said
and the word came out slowly,
in it were all the times they’d talked,
all the nights she’d cried
and he had sighed
then loved as though it didn’t matter,
when it was squirming warm and sweet smelling
behind her abandon,
and staked his heart
with a sizzling fear to the pillow.

She turned her head away
and watched the distance
where her hurt lay visible and aching.
He looked there and saw it too
and reached out and squeezed her hand.

The tree beside the table
hung low branches,
flowers bloomed around its trunk
where a butterfly in lithe grace unfurled
as they left hand in hand
pulling the sniffing dog
from the sweet smelling dirt.

and Ms. Grandmother - it is my presumed assumption [with glorious glee] that you shall be starting a baby book of poetry, each and every one to be shared here for star approval, mind you!

A great write - your kids will love it!

to be with you...
I've tried to hide my passion,
but it's just no use...
piece by piece I lose it
when you walk into the room...

Lovely poem, as I have never read it before so glad you posted it.

NOW...if this is your first are you ever are heading into territory unknown let me tell you. It is the land of "getaway with anything", where a smile makes your actually flutter like the wings of a hummingbird, and your spirit will soar on the wings of butterflies. Congratulations, and between the two of us, maybe now there could be a children's section at Pipps; I personally would love that for all the parents and grandparents who can not contain all their love and must write it out about "their" cutest.
