The Cabin

by Michael Auguste

Within the cabin lanterns glow
To keep the darkness in its place
And there in front of fire he lies
Soft amber warmth upon his face

He built this cabin by a stream
To live alone, away from man
He traps and gardens for his food
And from the stream there's gold to pan

As shadows dance upon the walls
And snow falls quietly in the night
His aching heart can find no rest
Another poem of her, he'll write

One day while walking hand in hand
A car did strike and kill his wife
His precious love forever lost
It stole the joy from his life

That hearts can bear such agony
A miracle to him it seems
Each day and night alone in pain
To only visit her in dreams

They'd always planned to settle here
And build a cabin such as this
Together to live out their lives
But of that hope they were to miss

He rises and wipes fog from panes
Through window views her lonely grave
And whispers words of love to her
Tells how he's trying to be brave

When morning comes he'll take the poem
Like all the rest that he did write
With ribbons tie it to her cross
Then speak to her 'til it is night

This broke my heart to read...

Karilea, Kathleen and Martie,

Thank you, ladies, for reading and enjoying this. It's just a story, not real. I was in particularly sad mood the day I wrote it.
Take care and SMILE now. :-)

Michael, at first I thought this was about our common dream, but soon found otherwise. A beautiful sad piece.

Sad, but very good. I agree that this is heartwrenching, and am thankful it isn't your truth and reality.

Dee,
Yes, a common dream to be sure. Sometimes one is just in the mood to write something sad. This came from one of those moods. Thanks for the nice comments and once again, it's so good to see you here again, sweet friend.

Doreen,
I agree...being a writer is a help. It allows to deal with feeling more easily than it would if we had to keep them pent-up. Thanks for reading this and ((((hugs)))) back to you.

Temptress,
Yes, this is only a story and does make me appreciate just how good my own life really is. Thank you, Temptress, for reading this piece.

Kit,
Thank you for the nice words and for visiting this sad poem.

I doubt I could find words to do this poem justice, so I'll simply say: This is incredible!

such beauty in these words, shows such love, in how he still built the cabin, that they had always wanted he still lived the dream, but only for the love he lost, he bided with the time. So exquisitely written with so much emotion.
