The man is haunted,
Shadows move behind his eyes
He keeps it held within –
Part of his careful disguise

Memories of things he’s done
Plague his days and dreams,
He can still see their eyes –
And will always here their screams.

He relives it always –
Lives it every day,
He tried everything
To make it go away.

The terror in their screams,
The horror in their eyes,
The clarity of it all
Still comes as a surprise.

He has told no one –
Keeps it deep inside,
To the world outside –
This secret he must hide.

He fixes his smile,
Keeps the darkness within –
Remembered voices send shivers -
Over his skin.

Butterflies and rainbows,
They are not for him –
Darkness and solitude –
The only things he needs

People look and stare –
At what’s in his eyes
Deep torment – yes
And a man full of lies

This sounds to me like a man who has gone through the torment of war. Counceling is the answer. A very moving poem Maggie

Thanks! This man is someone very close to me, someone very complicated and tormented.

This makes me think of someone that needs that darkness to be able to survive for some reason. Things that happen to the human mind goes through processes. I wish I could just sit with this person ...them knowing they don't have to speak a word...why is speaking always, but always necessary. It's not. I would love for that person to be able to lay their head in my lap and curl up and cry for hours if they needed. Things aren't always explainable....they just aren't.
This made me weep while reading...a heavy heart is no fun..I pray this person finds their sunlite someday...meanwhile I will never forget this poem, not ever, and this person will always be in my thoughts.

SharaRose - you may have wept while reading the poem, and you have made me weep with the words you have written.

It's funny that you should say that you wish he could curl up with his head on your lap and cry - he has done this with me on a few occassions.

Thank you for your kind words.
