A certain discomfort envelopes the air
Around the table. The cacophony
Of conversations and car rumblings seem
To undulate, synchronizing with
The barely heard music. And I can't
Help but notice how they amplify
Whenever we ran out
Of something to talk about.

And we talked about things. Stupid
Things, serious things. Funny
Things. Interesting things. We asked
Questions about each other's lives. And in
Between, we notice something
Different about ourselves. A smile that
Wasn't there before. A cheerfulness not expected,
But nonetheless welcome. A shyness
Out of place, awkward, sweet,
Mesmerizing. The invisible hour comes and goes
So fast. But the times
Not spent with each other
Feels like the passing of a century.
Will it be that
Long before we sit again
Around a table.
