It’s a good heart,
    this heart of mine
         a strong heart
         a loving heart
filled with all the trials and tears
    joys and fears
            of a passionate life.
I’d take this one any day
    over one that is
          perfect and new
                undamaged by time
                unbroken by love
for it has moved me so close
    to the center of my being
         that I know a
              quiet touch can say more
    then a dictionary full of words
          and eternity’s of talking.
It has brought me so close
    to some in my life
         that silence is comfortable
               enjoyed, yearned for
and the logistics of space and distance
       mean nothing . . . nothing at all.
This heart of mine has taken me
       to kneel before mighty towers
            fallen down
to wars, earthquakes, riots, and all
           human injustices.
                   It has brought me
so close to death
        that I spend less time
              fearing
                   and more time
        Living, loving, life.
I have been the rain and snow
       softly gliding down
               and the wind
               swaying the mighty oak
I have been the waves kissing the shore
     and then, shyly, running away.
             I have been the first
                      cry from newborn lungs
     and the last word
              from dying lips.
And so I stand here with this heart of mine
         torn and tattered . . .
               damaged, broken
                       enlarged by life.
