Closing my eyes to the world
Trying the ponder a lowly question
Within my depths of my mind
lies a dark and terrible thing
a voice, only a faint whisper in the wind
but yet like rolling thunder
echoing in my mind
dark and hateful words, full of venom
“Coward, loser, no one can love you!
You can’t do anything right!”
causing such chaos in my life
the fear the voice brings to my heart
I become frozen solid, hesitation for every choice
So, I can only watch as many an opportunity
for money, for happiness, for love
pass me by, like a stranger in the night
the voice becomes dormant once in a while
and in those moments, I feel happiness once more
but now the voice has returned
once again on its mission of torment
to destroy every inch of my being
my heart, my soul, torn asunder
what must I do to silence it for all time
to finally find inner peace
and to bring this nightmare to an end

Fear destroys the mind, depression destroys the soul... only love and compassion may save you from death.

LonelyShadow~

'a voice, only a faint whisper in the wind
but yet like rolling thunder

This piece is poignantly riveting~
Some are 'driven' by 'the voice' ...
You have described it very clearly~

'what must I do to silence it for all time
to finally find inner peace
and to bring this nightmare to an end'

I don't know if your poetic question is rhetorical or not ..... and while I don't have an 'answer' .... that which I refer to as 'calling them out' is the only resolution that comes to mind.
Often when confronted ... the 'voices' retreat ... never to be heard thunderously assaulting our self-esteem again~

Thank you for the read~

Lonely Shadow,
When the protaganist of this poem stops watching opportunities
and *takes* them ...

Then he'll have better, wiser things
to write about.

Thank you for posting here. Dark always needs writers.

before you can forgive others you have to forgive yourself
before you can love others you must love yourself
