5. The Lady Dies

A statue of she,
facing the sun,
from within the graying room.

Her marble eyes
face yardful bees.
Even now, their honeyed hum.

Her husband's work,
crude, malformed,
but still a work of she.

So tired. Bees
never are.
Just want now to sleep.

A yellow shape.
Ruffled motion.
A shadow? No. A bird.

Lady listens
to its song.
A song without a word.

Oh, it's time.
I see. To fly.
Yes. I'm ready. See?

Slowly spreads
out her wings.
And they fly away.

Marble ankles,
gripping hold,
her dress pressing down.

Like starlight then,
glowing faint.
Dusk away from dawn.

She slumps in tight,
a ringing cloud.
Black angel's haloed feet.

As night comes,
the final moon
glows upon her ring.

This is without a doubt my favorite poem in the Diastonene cycle. Of course, I haven't written 7 through 12 yet, so that stands to reason.
