Good evening, my Gentle Darkness,
Why have you not wandered back sooner?
remember the welcome entwined about the cold steel
of a dreamer's gates?
If you can remember just how rich this friendship made the lushness of the land beyond the tears
then come
and worry not
for I still hold the key
and what else does a dreamer do, M'Lady?
and what else does this dreamer do?
It was midnight it seems when you came
a face surpassing all I had ever noticed
gazing at me at first like I could be any other.
My hand held itself out quietly
not expecting return
except wanting
for yours to reach through the bars
and feel the comfort of what was on the other side.
There was a land where all were understood
all who passed would come for peace
all who passed could go at any time
but the burden of the memory,
ahhh the smells of friendship warm
softening every petal,
would soon bring them wandering back
rapping on the heavy lock that seemed to forbid
and yet yeilded to all entrusted keys.
You were the visiter I had not imagined
as you sat beside the river of reluctance
bearing your soul for me to see
sending your tears
your pain
and your anger in the directional rush of that river
and you smiled genuine to be beside a friend
and I smiled
knowingly acknowledging the softness inside
despite the rage
despite the pain
despite whatever you wore as a shroud.
It was you who brought darkness,
gentle to my dreaming garden
and it awakened
bloomed beneath that touch.
Stay longer
for the darkness is gentle to the blinding light
and my eyes have likely become adjusted
to what lives within the night of one's soul
so I seek as always
the solace and comfort of the arms
of a Gentle Darkness
that always lets me escape when needed.

I will not bend to the cowardice of a silent judgement.
