Gray hands greet my shoulders.
Cold lips reach for my face.
"Come in"
a spidery voice snares my heart,
entangling child memories and adult vision.

What is this feeling?
At what point did Death decide
to steal their faces
and parade around in this house
I know so well?

It was problably when I was busy.
You know,
important stuff.

I peer at the bastard.
Letting him know...
... I see you...
Death regards me,
amused.

"Don't worry, dear...
here... have some more ham."

A smile etched for 81 years
exposed my folly.
This haunted mask,
that I would someday wear,
was only a reminder
for those of us too busy.
You know...
important stuff.

Very impressed.

A belated welcome to "Dark"

Great write on a subject near and dear to my heart.

It's getting to the point where I look forward to yr posts each day, brian.

Heh heh. Loved this, even in its strange sadness/inevitability.

Said if I only could ...

P.S., for something of a familiar feel (food wise, anyway), check out Waking up in sanctuary. Shhh ... don't tell anyone!
