The Last Snowflake

By:  Adam Vanderven© 01/08/01

Like the last snowflake falling,
On the first day of spring,
I hang on fragile but stead fast,
Waiting to melt, to wither away
So that I may be at peace

Instead I walk in the moonlight
On an invisible trail to a place
I once called heaven...No I still do
Our special place where I fell in love

Not to the piazza where we first met
But to the place under the willow tree
Where I felt its tear lay upon my cheek
Its one true tear of happiness

Knowing that two people came together
In one magical moment to share their first kiss
Becoming hostages of one another's heart
Never wanting to be set free

But with the force of an earthquake
You tore your heart away
Like a Band-Aid been ripped from a wound
Opening a hurt I have felt before
So long ago yet the blood still runs

So these words I must say
If only to make it easier to carry on
To live on
To find another

"Why can't we dream on? Pretend?"
Our love once so priceless so tranquil.
Alas we cannot live on illusions
My heart cannot be sustained by my love alone

The time we spent together
Every moment, every look, every touch
All our hopes and dreams for the future
I will cherish them all, each and every one

And I will treasure all the memories
The good and the bad
And my treasure will remain here...In my heart
Locked away...safe

I will have it all, all I've ever wanted
And I will not have to worry about the past
As long as the good memories remain here...within
Never to be alone again
As long as my heart beats with memories
Of our once shared passions

I say these words like this
Because to your face, I could not bare
I'd only cry, lose my exposure, plea for you to stay
And like my heart break, those tears I could not take

So like the last snowflake wanting to hold on
Waiting to disappear
So does my love for you
Holding on and on but waiting to fade away.

In life things come and go. Live and die. Prosper and fall. But our love and poetry will always carry on.

Very beautiful analogy here, Adamly.
It expresses the pain perfectly.
But give yourself another chance at it,
your next 25 years are still waiting.

A great poem from the heart.
Thanks.
