I have a sword of Damocles
Hanging o'er my head
It is linked to my depression
And fills me up with dread

Sometimes the thread is tenuous
It wavers and is thin
Then I call upon my friends
To reel this monster in

I find that talking poetry
Can keep the doom at bay
But if my friends do not respond
It's difficult to stay

I never know from day to day
What severs this fine cord
But often in my head I hear
The crashing of the sword

At times I look and think that I
Should cut the thread and go
Precipitate the ending
While it grieves me to do so

The thread is strengthened now
and then, by unexpected praise
In recognition of the struggle
That overshadows all my days

Everyday I'm waiting
For the sword to drop
It only takes a tiny thing
To spiral down and never stop

One day soon I hope and pray
When I'm not stabilized by pills
I'll look upon this time as growth
Know I survived the spills

The threat of doom will disappear
The sun will shine once more
The sword of Damocles will fade
I'll stand proud at life's open door

I know that I'm high maintenance
Yet for now I must depend
On words of strong encouragement
From those, I would call friend

Hold on, even to a thread, Kethry.
I've found the mood swings of depression to be very much like the weather where I live.
It changes daily, often within the same day.
Severe episodes are almost incapacitating.
But if you use the ups to write,
you can also use the downs to write.
And please post them here.

We will always read,
because we know your need.

Thanks coyote,
in my need
I post the seed
redemptions plan
of who I am
sometimes I write
sometimes I fight
at times surrender
to the night
but to know
that you are here
creates a tie
bonded by tears

Kethry,
haven't been
where you are
couldn't know
where you go
but poetry
many my days
has lightened hues
deeper than blues.
(and maybe that's why we are still here)
I've always enjoyed your writing, please continue.

Krawdad,
it's people like you
so loyal and true
who help people like me
write on in poetry
with ties you can bind
and settle my mind
help keep me here
make life less drear. Thank you.

Irish Rose
we're two of a kind
I speak to your mind
when you give praise
it lightens my days
it anchors me here
helps me not to fear
you communicate
why I must wait
we're two of a kind
and you speak my mind. Thank you for that

Swamp Faeryie.
in giving these words
means you have heard
my sorrow my plight
and my endless night
that you can share
shows that you care
I thank you my dear
for holding me here.

Sven,
my friend you see
the pain in me
but holding tight
defers the night
I can now stay
held by your sway
that keeps me here
casts out all fear
in your strength
I'll go the length
on you depend
and call you friend. Thank you so much for all that you do and all that you are.

Kethry ... you have a good premise here ... taking a physical thing, such as "the" sword of Damocles and using it to metaphor your own dread and dismay ... encouraging words from others is always a healing patch ... keep writing, but more important (IMHO), keep reading ... not just here, but in the annuls of poetry, history, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, archaeology, and on, and on, and on ...

learn what has not been said before, but if it has, say it with your heart ... good poem ... revisit the meter, but a good poem.

(and please, call me friend)

My calling before me, let quill be my offering;
For to be called poet, no greater gift to receive.

Hello Kethry
My name is Sue, and like yourself, I too have suffered depression and can so easily relate to this haunting piece of writing you have penned. It sends a chill down my spine whenever I hear of someone suffering from depression and feeling that life isn't worth living.  We all have something to give in our lives and I hope that your writing helps you a great deal as I know it has helped me.  I have only just this minute finished submitting a poem about depression entitled "A Crippling Illness" and I would be so grateful if you could find the time to read it if you have the chance.  Take care and my thoughts are with you......Sue

M A Miller
to call you friend
would gladness send
keep me from  harm
with strengthened arm
courage renew
between we two
learn not to wallow
in depression's hollow
soon I return
to live and learn
reduce my sorrow
count on the morrow

Suetang
you have stood where I now stand
for ill or good offering, your hand
and you have felt the things I feel
to know this grounds me makes me more real

anonymous albert
thank you friend
for reaching to send
good wishes to me
to help set me free
tomorrow I'll rise
give up my sighs
be done with weeping
return then to sleeping
with rational mind
peace once more I will find
anchored without cause
friendship ceased my wars.
