I believed you
when you said those words
with such certainty,
proving to me
that forever does exist.

Now I know that words
are just words;
fragile and insubstantial,
nothing more than sounds
that please the ear.

Tell me no more words,
I will not listen.
They are the cobblestones
paving a desolate road,
and my shoes are old.

I enjoyed the last three lines:

They are the cobblestones
paving a desolate road,
and my shoes are old.

"and my shoes are old." That puts a whole new view point for me.

Words can be beautiful if they are the expression of honest action...

but it is the action part that is important much of the time - I agree..
