cairn

I have crawled out of this hole in the ground.
Here you see it. And I pause on this rock,
old, scarred, and stained.
And I still taste the rotting smell
of unearthed things down there. It's true.
And because I have no hands to do much else,
I stumped alone, leaving this red trail
that leads back down. That too.

Yes, but,
I dug this hole myself, with a stake
held firmly in my teeth.
And though it is a stinking space
cut in the earth, and could be more big,
it has a cairn of stinking mud which I made
to mark its place.
You may look if you like.
And its gets warm the further down you dig.

As for here, well,
the air sometimes grows sluggish and cold,
sometimes stops.
And many snakes have I pulled from my head
to speak to you this way.
And the sky is dull and flat as frost on glass.
But I am on friendly ground here,
and clothed in my afterbirth,
and near the steaming foul breath
of unearthed earth,
I am well enough.

Now,
as they say there is but one way to go,
I think that I will build this cairn
to a tower of mud up to the sky,
to birds and clouds and rainbows and such.
And in the sun it will lose its stink and dry.
And here, to the lee, will be its shadow,
a reflection of me.
There is no need to be humble, I think.

For as I look down at this hole in the ground,
black and cold, I feel some small joy.
The earth embraced me with its civil tongue
and insistently lapped me awake.
And with the prod of rising civility
released me in my peripheral winter.

So that now, I am invisible, to be
silently touching sight,
seeing what light I may see,
and impatiently step on sleeping death.
Me.

Isis -- thank you. I like them too. There is just something about them.

Swamp -- thank you also. I've never been collected before. Or been a genius. I'll take them both as compliments.
