See me smile, see the grin
Upon my face, it means nothing
So used am I to peer beneath
Hooded lashes, to hide my weep
To smile and answer "how are you"?
When you ask do you feel blue?

You will never see me frown
For I can always act the clown
It doesn't mean that I'm okay,
It's just the things I've learned to say
Deflect my pain, this I will do
And hide myself away from you

See this mask, I wear it well
To look at me you'd never tell
That what you see is such a lie
I smile but only want to cry
And I couldn't let you see
The shards that shatter parts of me

Hear my words concealing pain
Nothing in my voice remains
I coached it hard and taught it long
No lament, just gift of song
And still somewhere I'm buried deep
Denied by self would promise keep

I do not want your sympathy
I just want to know what's really me

Good subject here, Kethry!  I too have been here and understand the thoughts.

Take care,

Everyone wears a mask... some of us wear one because even we are scared of the demons we see in the mirror.  I have found.. we are always reaching out... for someone to see beyond that mask.

Kethry, we all wear masks at times, let's just hope the times we need to wear them become less and less for all of us!!
Beautiful hon,

Hi Kethry,
Well, what's really you is poet, for one thing.  Or is that one of your masks?  I'd bet not.  What else there is, is to be discovered by you.  That's one of the purposes of my poetry "to discover who I am".
Excitement, pain, joy and on and on . . .
As you put it, "Write on".

Wow your poem was so close to the truth for me it was unbelieveable!  I think we not only have one mask but thousands, every person sees us differently!
I luv your work!

Kethry - this is a gentle, poignant reflection - and hopefully it will encourage us to look beyond the masks of others, besides looking deeper into ourselves.
Very nicely done!
