one rainy summer morning

what happened to the lady
was that she fell back asleep
before the sun could light her face
and let her public see her weep

what happened to the lady
was that she fell on an unseen crack
a sidewalk repair could have fixed it all
but she blamed herself for her broken back

what happened to the lady
was she got onto the train
watched birds fly higher than
the drops of summer rain

what happened to the lady
was she got her named misplaced
her luggage said 'the lady'
she didn't have a face

what happened to the lady
she lies in a cemetary down the way
i bring her supposed favorite flowers
on her supposed favorite day
and i weep that unknown beauty
somehow got lost along the way
