A harsh potion brewed with bittersweets,
Of ancient herbs and drops of shed tears.
The cup of death is held out to each of us
Until the defeated will surrenders.

There is no escape when lips stand poised
At the brim and the stale scent is inhaled.
And neither privileges nor division exists
Where patient death is so concerned.

It is meant for the body to die but once
And then the throne judgment of the soul.
Gather life's goodness to your soft breast
Against the course of destiny's edge.

I'm not a religious person by any stretch of the imagination, but I did like this one.  We only die once, but however I tend to think we have been prejudged.  Welcome here!  I do believe you will fit in fine!

MA Miller: Thank you for the kind welcome.
I have only been writing since March 2000.
So I still have much to learn and a long way to go. But I find reading other's works and reading in general is the way to learn. I tend to shy away from critique somewhat. But if I know a person I might welcome it. Perhaps that is my loss.

firejerm: Thank you for reading and enjoying this piece.
I can respect everyone's beliefs.
And if either of us is wrong, God will let us know.
Until, that time, I would never presume to know
or try to speak into another's life.
I admire your speaking your mind. Shows character and strength.
However, you will find traces of my honor to the living God and his
Son in several of my poems.
They are a part of my life and I can not deny them.
Your welcome is most appreciated!

Well said, for Death indeed plays no favorites. Unimpressed by well or wealth,  he greets all equally and waits for no man.

I enjoyed this.

HE:  Thank you for enjoying this. It is very true there is no respecter of persons for death. And no one is exempt from hardships in life. If life gives you lemons...make lemonade.

jmlee:  No one can drink from the cup of life and cheat death. Thanx!

This poem was really well thought out and written. I loved it! I also liked the picture at the bottom. Very nice, goes along with the poem perfectly.

I know Mystic our body will die and return to dust but those that share the cup of life can have eternal life...those who provide for their souls by receiving Jesus as the savior of their soul...James
