Counterpoise

Rather to know an aching void,
And the searing cut of pain;
To tread the shadowed wastes of want,
And brave the purpled dark of fear.
Rather to dwell in echo haunted silence,
Where whispered words beseech;
To know the clouded hours of weary days,
And heart wrung fantasies of sleep-lost nights.
Rather to feel the Ghost Moth's phantom brush
of silvered wings,
And hear the sorrow laden drip of countless tears;
To greet each coming dawn with weary eyes,
And hail the dusk with prayer.
Rather to stand against the wind's relentless power,
To cast into its merciless gale an endless cry...
And wait in solitude till Time is done,
Than never to have known
The dearness of your touch, nor seen
Deep within your eyes the counterpart
Of all the hopes my heart will ever hold!
