Exploitation of a working class.

Exploited workforce,
Carry out mind numbing tasks,
An over used resource,
Faces hidden by masks,
Scars on their face,
Scars on their back,
If they can’t keep up pace,
Then they’re flogged till their black,
Working late into darkness,
They work by the flicker,
In cold naked starkness,
Carrying baskets of wicker,
Deep down in the dank,
Where the air is old and stale,
They drink from a water tank,
Or a dirty old pale,
Exploited children ,
Women work as well,
Not allowed down again,
To that dirty, black, coal hell,
Removed from equality,
They think that it’s not fair,
But the reformers cannot see,
That they now live in a pit of dispair

Andrew.

Ignorance is strength" - George Orwell "1984"

This reminds me of the immigrants that first came to AMerica and how they were treated. I liked this poem. Keeps us all aware.
Very well done.

Thanks everybody for all your replies, this poem is indeed about the coal minig era in England, although I guess the conditions were much the same in other countries if not worse. Anyway th whole idea came from a histroy lesson that i had a couple of weeks ago.
