If only I could be
like those girls you see

on the magazine cover
Oh why do I even bother

These hips, these thighs
I could never be their size

If I could only be
like the girls on tv

with the long, luscious hair
that makes the guys stare

with her nearly perfect smile
looking cute in the latest style

If only I could be
anyone but me.

good poem... but you should really learn to be happy with yourself!
you should be grateful that you are even able to walk, that you don't have disabilties like some. be grateful and happy that you are God's unique creation and he made you just like how you are!
you should learn to accept yourself for who you are because its only then you can be truly happy!

Hey, you know something? I am a homely guy.
No, don't correct me it's true. And I have learned something about being homely...
It allows you to filter out the real people from the fakers. Everyone who ever cared about me did so because of what lay on the inside.
I would never want to be like the girls (or I suppose the guys, in my case) on TV. I would then be devoid of my filtration system.
I get fewer, but greater friends, I find. And it really is the best situation I could want.
Hope this reply doesn't bother you, it is just my own experience. And maybe something to think about?
Good job on the poem.

Hon, I can really relate to what you are saying. I find myself wanting to look like those girls on magazine covers, but you have to realize that you have wonderful qualities of your own. Physical beauty always fades with time, but the beauty of your mind and soul will never lose its strength! Thanks for sharing.

You really shouldn't be thinking that way hon. I know you and I know you are one of the best people in the world that I could possibly have as a friend. Especially since you have been listening to me whine all the time lately but if we both just persevre we will eventually find what we are looking for.

Angel, why would you honestly want to be like the girls in the magazines or on the television? They were obviously born with everything right which can be a pain in the ass to look at but just think about how much those waif cat walk models are missing out on. The alternative lifestyle that equals fun!!
Every single person on this planet it unique and they bring to this existence things that no other person would be able to create in a million years. If we have two of these people, how boring would that be? Be happy with who you are because no one can replace you.
By the way, long luscious hair isn't hard to get. Use Pantene Pro V. Not only does it make it shiny, but bouncy as well.

Keep smiling and hope the lecture didn't bother you.

I also am not the best looking guy. But I mean, youd on't have to be. There are some people who apparently have the perfect bodies (Most people would say that of emily French - Valerie knows who) But For a lot of guys, it's not a big deal. I mean, of course, a lot of guys are only out for one thing, but there are also a lot who're very sensible.
Also, one word: computers. Television, magazines, all of it is a lie. They can use computers to make the woman look thinner or taller. It's pretty annoying. Another thing, beauty isn't everything. Gillian Anderson, you know Scully on the x-files, she was hired out of all the women who wanted the job, because she did NOT have the perfect looks or body. Anyway, just saying. Dont let it get to you, be happy with who you are - there are some great poems in here about it.

Do you really want to be airbrushed? Graphics create most of those girls. Be happy with who you are, b/c it really is wahts inside that counts. At least you wont have cobwebs!!

This is a good poem... But don't wish to be someone you're not. Just be happy with you, because I'm positive that more people care about the person you are inside rather than your outward appearance.

Nice job.

This totally hit home with me. I have said things like this so many times it not ever funny. I watch those thin, pretty, popluar girls on tv and think "that will never be me" and it doesn't help when guys expect ever girl to be model thin. Its really depressing. I know I'll nver be super skinny, its just something I have to live with...I finally decide to stop going on crazy diets and just make sure I was healthy and in good shape. Everyone in my family is big, so for me there isn't really much I can do about it...Anyways, I really liked this.

If there was something that I would change about myself, it'd be my mind. I'd like to have a better mind and just be able to think up the greatest things. Be some sort of genius and stuff.
My body isn't perfect, but when it comes down to it.......it doesn't really matter because if you have a chance of ever being remembered after you've passed on.....it's not going to be because you were this skinny, little twig on a magazine that in my eyes aren't even as hot as barbara walters (and damn is she old and ugly!). You'll be remember for your mind and your way of being.
What it all comes down to is WHO you are. When you find a husband he'll not only find you attractive just the way you are, but he'll love your personality and THAT'S what matters the most. Cuz when we're all old (yes ALL of us!) we'll all be nasty and wrinkly and have arthritis and bladder problems! Some of us might even wear diapers.
So let's stop this nonsense, you know you're a great person. Let's enhance the inner self, the outer self can follow but don't obsess over it.
Javier over and out!

I also often find myself wondering why I cant look more like the girls on t.v...but I dont think you are honestly unhappy with yourself but this is a more general poem about body images. I would imagine that most of the time you are actually pretty confident with your looks, but everyone has one of those days. You used some great lines and great creativity. Great Poem!!!!!

Wow what an overwhelming response. I'm sorry I didn't make it clear that this wasn't a poem about myself. I actually heard a song and then a friend complained to me about her body and we were joking around about it and out came this poem. It was just a little ditty and I figured most people have days like that. Thank you all for your words though. Fortunately for me though, I am pretty confident about myself. I know my insides overshine my body. Thank you for your words though. Sorry about the misunderstanding though.

yes is this a raw and rare depiction of every girls true feelings, and if they aren't, they're lying.

You've heard it 14 times before, but I'll say it once more. LIKE YOURSELF! After all, you have to live with yourself, why not make the ride a little easier huh?

Thank you for replying to my poem. I do like myself. I really just thought this would touch a lot of girls out there and let them know they aren't the only ones out there feeling this way.

I'm so sorry you feel this way.  You should love yourself for who you are. I know, I know....we're always wanting better things and that's how life is.  Don't use this as an excuse though.  Love your self forst and someone will come and love you for who you are.  Be strong

They make fun of me for being "small" being "too white" or even being "too short". Like I can control that. Trust me, this is something EVERYONE goes thru @ one tyme or another.

To be honest the poem was great, perfectly sentenced and well thought AND applied to what you're feeling.
Also the girls on the covers and T.V constantly get stalked and are practically plastic, so would you really want phone calls in the middle of the night sayin they're watching you, Well then.....
