Exciting News for ALL Members - A New Direction for pipTalk Forums

Have you ever wondered about these Forums?  Have you ever pondered what it is, that keeps you coming back each day to what many of us regard as our "home away from home"?  These forums aren't really about the Internet … they're not about software and features, and they're only peripherally about poetry. In truth, these forums are about people. They are … about "you".

Learning. Writing. Doing. People helping people. Not because they have to, not because there's something in it for them, but rather because it's an enjoyable and rewarding experience in each of our lives and it simply feels like the "right" thing to do. Helping and sharing with other people brings with it, a unique sense of satisfaction, an energy rarely found in a world of greed and ambition. People helping people.

This week, pipTalk launches a pilot program we've dubbed "Deputy Moderators".

In essence, this program offers any qualified Member the opportunity to volunteer for a two-week tour of duty as a Moderator within their forum of choice, with all the duties and abilities of a Senior Moderator. The Deputy Moderators will meet in their own closed forum, where they can discuss forum issues and find solutions to those issues, where they can learn and help each other. People helping people.

We are testing this project first in Teen, with the hopes of later expanding it into our other busy forums. If you are an active participant of the Teen forum and would like to help launch this program, and learn more about the behind-the-scenes activities that sculpt Passions into the wonderful environment you participate in daily, we urge you to check out the following link:
/main/deputies.cgi

This will provide you with more information, a schedule of vacancies, and the application form itself. If you have any questions, please respond to this thread or write me at kit@netpoets.com and we'll try to find answers together. The success of this project depends on "you"!

People helping people.  That's what pipTalk Forums are all about!

I think this is a great idea. Even if you only try it one time, you'll get an idea what it's like to Moderate here.

Thanks for keeping this at the top everyone! This is a really exciting new direction, and we'd like everyone to have the opportunity to read this.

For those who have indicated their interest through an application already ... THANK YOU! It's great to see you excited about the prospects of helping behind the scenes.

It may be a short while before we begin to respond to the applications as we work through the process, so please be patient, and know that everyone will receive a response once we get fully rolling.

I was really excited that Teen was chosen as the Pilot Project. I think we have an incredibly talented group of Teens here, and it gives you all the opportunity to really shine amongst this large overall community. I really hope you'll agree that together ... we can get this brand new project off to a wonderful start!

I have faith in you, and I'll be here to help every step of the way!

Much appreciation,
/Kit

Just to add my two cents to the pot, I'm personally very excited about the possibilities this new direction presents us.

The growth of pipTalk has been very gratifying, but not without difficulties. We essentially face two alternatives. We can either forsake the family standards upon which we've built our foundation, or we can find a way to maintain those standards in the face of continued growth. Frankly, the first alternative is completely unacceptable. There are enough cauldrons of chaos on the Internet already and - while I think they are necessary representations of freedom - I have absolutely no wish to add to them. If we are unable to maintain our high standards, then pipTalk has no further reason to exist.

But that leaves us with only one alternative, and it's not an easy one to implement. Finding a way to maintain our standards leaves us, again, with two choices. We can ask those who are willing, our Senior Moderators, to devote more and more and more time to the boards - a course of action doomed to failure, as inevitable burnout sets in - or we can find a way to limit the amount of work and time it takes to maintain those standards. The latter suggests two actions, which really boil down to the same thing. Members who continue to upset the apple cart will be asked to leave, and forums which cause the bulk of the problems will be closed. Those, of course, boil down to taking a hard line against problems, with the eventual result being only those who want to be here will remain.

The Deputy Moderator program gives us yet another alternative, one that perhaps should have been obvious a long time ago. Instead of burning out our Moderators (who, like you, would like to come here and simply read good poetry), and instead of taking a hard line against problems (which will inevitably result in unfair decisions), we are asking everyone to help maintain the integrity of pipTalk.

In the early days of pipTalk, these forums were all easily Moderated. If someone happened through our digital doors and posted objectionable material, the Members were the first to yell foul. A Moderator might wake up to twenty or thirty emails in her box, each warning of an inappropriate post. Everyone here believed as strongly in our standards as do our Moderators, and they would allow no one to compromise those standards. The forums didn't belong to me. They didn't belong to the Moderators. They belonged to the Members, and that's EXACTLY  the way it should be. Returning to that precept is the only way these forums can continue to survive.

Kit, bless her heart, has accepted the responsibility of making the Deputy Moderator program a reality. I doubt many of you realize how strong an advocate she's been for the Teen forum, or how many countless hours she spends making this place work. We all owe her a tremendous debt of gratitude for her devotion.

With Kit's permission, I looked over the list of those of you who have volunteered since this project was opened yesterday. I was, frankly, not very surprised by the names I saw. The first people to step to the plate invariably are those who have consistently proven they are here to give as much as or more than they receive. They are the more active Members of the Teen forum, those who are always willing to offer an encouraging hand or supportive word. They care, and that's really what this place is all about.

To them, I offer my heartfelt thanks.

Very sweet Ron! Happy to see our standards of PIP stay the same and not plunder to the levels of OTHER poetry sites.
This will all work out perfectly!

Not surprised eh? Well .
Haha... I guess it's really no secret I'm also in there. Looking forward to the program... I have had some tough times in the past, but I feel I am on the road to redemption.
Plus I spend a LOT of time in here...
So yeah, I'm really looking forward to exploring a new dimension of PIP Talk.
And I'll agree with Javier... I have been searching a LONG time for a decent poetry forum. And I have been to a lot of forums where it is you post, nobody replies. just a bunch of non-replied posts.
To be quite honest, I think the "welcome" email that prompts you to reply twice as much as you post is VERY effective.
It got me into the swing of replying... because, to be honest, I might not have otherwise.
But now that I read, it has become an activity all that much more enjoyable. And my poetry is far better for it.
Ah, just remembering the days when half of my replies were in my own threads... memories...
Oops... I am way off topic!
I'm sure the DM program will be a great experience for all.
I don't know how many signed up yet though... I wonder if some of the people would mind making it clear in this thread?
Oh and Javier-- you are doing a supafine job, my friend!
Can't wait for my turn!

It is an absolutely fantastic idea and it will be very good to see it all in motion. I saw Dopes has already become a Deputy Mod and you are doing a pretty sweet job of it too.

I do hope that more than a few members reply to this as it is something that everyone should participate in.

Well, I haven't said anything yet so...
I think this new program is a great idea. I don't know if my talents( or the lack thereof) would qualify me for the Deputy Moderator position, but I do know who has the talent to do so. We already know who they are, cause they've all signed up already(so much for modesty ). Well, I just wanted to show my appreciation to this forum cause I've been to others and this is the best I've seen, by far. Enough Rambling
