Along the shore, the reed beds lie,
where cattails stretch to reach the sky
and many birds reside within,
who raise their voice in merry din.
Fleets of ducks and geese appear,
with rafts of offspring they will rear,
here upon these shallow lakes,
until the autumn weather wakes
a migratory yen and they
will one day rise and fly away
and as I watch them disappear,
their haunting cries drift to my ear.

The loons though, stay the whole year long.
We often hear their manic song
and see the handsome black and white
of feathered forms, or catch the sight
of herons, wading stoically,
or standing, staring hungrily
into the water at their feet,
in hopes there'll be a fishy treat.
This is the birds domain and so,
we show respect each time we go,
for though their lives hold us in thrall,
we are intruders, after all.
