The Emergency Room was packed
at this hour,after midnight,
thick with the slick sour aroma
of blood and sweat and ripe puke.
The regular patrons were here,
sick crackheads and stoned cabbies,
screaming babies, shady ladies;
nurses ducking for cover.
They stuck out here, the two of them;
washed out, weary figures in
a florescent sea of loud life,
each tight against the other.
Their waxen faces held the look
of the anxious doomed,waiting
for some God in a white lab coat
to hit them behind the knees.
Fear sat behind them, hope up front,
both fighting for full control;
passing messages between them
like familiar rivals.
