I loved to stand beneath the spreading oak;
protected by a canopy of leaves.
Its branches strong, just like my loved one's arms.
I'd yet to learn the way a look deceives.

A strong wind blew, my precious oak came down.
I didn't know 'twas hollow at the core
and then my love I thought I knew so well,
proved as untrue and now loves me no more.

The strength of both I thought would ever be.
My tree, my love, so empty both within.
I stand bereft, my helpless heart exposed.
I dare not trust a tree, a love again.

This is really sad, but so well written. I really liked how you were able to compare the two. This is a great write, just sorry you had to go through it.

I missed this somehow when it was first posted. The pace here is so fast! Anyway I'm glad I found it now and really enjoyed the comparison in it. Good poem Joyce.
