Last night I heard you call to me
and so I went outside to see
If yard light would extend so far
out on the water, where you are,
that I could see you as you dive
and bring your dinner up alive.
You favor fish right from the deep
of this far lake, where legends sleep.
You were beyond the ring of light,
but sent your wild call on the night
and I could see you in my mind.
There is a quality I find
within your song, that speaks to me
of wilderness and ferity.

I've seen you in the early day,
as you are floating on the bay.
So handsome and your black and white
plumage is such a striking sight.
I know dark feathers that you wear
mean breeding season must be near
and I will watch to see your young,
when their seasonal song is sung.
By autumn you will be dull gray
and then it's time to fly away
to winter in a warmer clime.
Before you leave, please take the time
to serenade and let me know.
I always miss you when you go!
