Rocking Horse Cowboy

Barely three, the cowboy sits astride
his plastic stallion set on springs
Holding on with one tiny hand
as he rocks and rides and swings

Faster he gallops, whooping he yells
His finger pointed as though a gun
he shoots bad guys to protect us
smiling broadly, having so much fun

He wants to eat while sitting there
so it’s corn dogs and grilled cheese
Holding his cup, he drinks his juice
and remembers to say thanks and please

At the end of the day, tired from play
he lets me take him from his steed
As I carry him to bed, I look at him
amazed that he’s growing like a weed

***
Those days are gone, he’s thirty now
his rocking horse was sold long ago
When he drives, I still catch a glimpse
a that Rocking Horse Cowboy I used to know

Thanks Marge! There's something about pretending to be a cowboy that most 'little men' can't seem to grow out of!!

This is so sweet, and I can definitely relate! Mine are 6 and 9, but already I recall when they were babies!

Thanks for sharing!

My family actually saved one of the rocking horses made from wood. It been a wild stallion to many in my family. As I rightly recall, all of us were horse crazy and remain so, only now they are alive and much taller. Such a nice memory you brought us.

So nice, these wistful memories, aren't they?

Gentle smile...........very nice write, Poet DeVine! A mother's reflection. Just beautiful!

Oh my...I am hoping we have a little boy with this next Grandchild as I have saved this for him to read! The child in me comes alive on reads like this...thank you for a "ride 'em cowboy moment" and such a precious one too, this was simply the cutest thing I have read in a long time. Great job!

I don't know how you could write anything that could explain the depth of a mother's love more than this does. Those memories never go away and the blood runs right through the birth veins of the heart out into this world of experiences where the role changes as the growth takes place but the love never changes.....I thought that this was delightful in so many ways!

My boys are grown too. God, I miss it!

Aww, this is too cool! I can see why it would be a little sad. I have a two year old boy that likes to squirt me with his water gun. Wish mine would do the cowboy thing, maybe then I wouldn't have any cold surprises lol. I can't imagine my son being 30. This is such a cool read.

This is such a great memory - as an ex cowgirl myself, and after watching my 4 siblings and my children on their rocking horses - all the same hand me down one - I can truly relate to this. Nicely done. Thanks, Panne
