The Window

by Michael Auguste

As I look through
the window,
I see a carpet of
lavender wildflowers.
They would be considered
weeds to anyone else.
They are now a part of my much
smaller world.

Here and there
are the bright yellow heads of
dandelions.
Some have already gone to seed,
to be carried off as
parachutes on a breeze.

Wild onions
are beginning to grow.

It rained last night
and clinging to the climbing rose
beside
the window
is a drop of rain,
magnifying
the roof of the house next door.
Have you ever noticed
how quiet it is after a rain?
This is how it is as I look through
the window.

So many lovely things to look upon.
Even the gray of overcast skies
shows movement,
with lighter shades of gray
here and there.
A sign that the rain is moving away
and the sun will soon return.

Last year at this time
I planted both vegetable and flower gardens.
I made sure to plant plenty of
red flowers to attract hummingbirds.
This year there will be no gardens,
or hummingbirds.

Our lives change
in so many unexpected ways.
This will be my first Spring
in a wheelchair.
The past year has taken so much
that it will never give back.

Even so, I do love to look upon my weeds.
They are so much prettier
than the bland green of manicured grass.
I think I'll keep them.

When my son arrives home from school
I'll ask him to pick some of these
wildflowers for my writing desk.

'Than the bland green...."

and yet, the green is so giving....

hugs, my friend...

I am so sorry about the wheelchair, but glad you can find true beauty and tell us about it in your lovely poem. Joyce

Matie and Joyce,

Thank you for reading this. There's no need to be sorry about the chair, please. I'm beginning to adjust to this new future. Bless you both.
