Falling Star

A lustrous star burst through the midnight sky
Illuminating space and sea and earth
A flaming torch of splendor streaking by
Gave pause to ponder visions of such worth

So beautiful the blazing tail of light
That lovers stopped to watch the firey sparks
And wished upon a falling meteorite
That vanished into spaces of the dark

So swiftly through the galaxy it came
Its flaunting brilliance garishly unfurled
For just a moment glory was its name
A falling star that briefly lit the world

Those stars that decorate the heavenly sea
Shine subtle twinkles for eternity

Lovely. Lovely. Lovely.

Though they only last for a moment, I love shooting stars....that's all we have on Earth, is one moment...they remind me of those who have had their moment...

Such wonderful imagery wrapped in rhyme divine ...
a lovely celestial sonnet Liz ... heavenly as well

I've spent many an evening lying in my Dad's pasture wishing on falling stars... but the dang things don't seem to deliver? *G* Beautiful poem, Elizabeth!

"My candle burns at both ends;
It will not last the night;
But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends--
It gives a lovely light!" -Millay

You can last eternity as a little twinking light, or you can light up the entire sky for a moment only, but live on in history forever. You describe this difference well, my friend. Another beautiful piece I'm honored to have read!

"Men judge generally more by the eye than by the hand, for everyone can see and few can feel."-Machiavelli
