Begging
Virginia Salter

wish I weren’t so begging
wish I’d confidence in me
wish I didn’t feel it needed
to find words you had for me

for when I go looking
they are few and far between
and then I begin my thinking
and my tears fall in a stream

wish I weren’t so addicted
to encouragement of sorts
and if wishing’s what I’m doing
wish I looked real good in shorts

oh I bring my sense of humor
though it’s lame too much I know
but it gets me through the hours
when replies come in a “No.”

is there anyone else out there
so plagued as am I
when I write of Mother Theresa
I want to bury my face and hide

for the things that I admire
in the humble life she led
was her giving and her loving
not her seeking to be fed

to be a servant, to my maker
yes my God
is a wondrous endeavor
for one’s time upon this sod

so then why can I not sacrifice
just as perfectly as she
my hunger for food, attention
great importance to me

not that I need the limelight
but just to know some how I matter
and just once in a while, daily,
reinforce above the clatter

I need the strokes too, Virginia. All humans are programmed to need 'em I think, but not so well programmed for giving 'em, so there never seem to be enough to go around.

Thanks for listening and commiserating. But, I do try to give them, I wish I had the stamina to give them to everyone who posts here. They certainly are a lot of very fine poets and people!

E veryone needs praise and to have their self respect cultivated by others sometimes... So I'm going to give yours a shot...I always enjoy your poetry and your replies and I know that by writing this piece you are coming from the heart which is the seat of motivation.... I love the humility of your words here...

this humility bespeaks nice things about you Virginia...keep up the good work!!

The poet is like a cocoon; in him the caterpillar of the past finds rest, and from him the butterfly of the future emerges.

Thanks so much, ethome! You are so tender and sweet.

Guess I'm just floundering here on my seat...
of motivation.

Better watch those seats of motivation... they've been known to dump me on the floor a few times. *S*

If only we could get paid to feed our poetic addictions, I don't think any poem or poet would go unapplauded. *S* And I know it's no consolation when you're wanting feedback for a particular work... but I do enjoy your work and look forward to reading! *S*

I really, really love and relate to this on so many levels!
