He is in pain and she can do nothing.
She can hold him, kiss him, touch him,
Yet all to no avail.
Each time, he smiles weakly,
An attempt made to help her, to comfort her.
She almost starts crying every time.
He is in such pain yet is selfless enough
To care for her.
What can she do to repay such a love?
She holds him, wraps her arms around him.
He puts his head down on her shoulder
His face is hidden as he lets go, shudders in her embrace.
She holds his life in her hands.
Her tears start falling,
but she stifles her sobs.
Her voice cries a silent scream
For the boy's pain and for her own.
She weeps and screams inwardly
But shows nothing to the world,
Or to the boy.
She is his rock, his strength,
Crumbling from the inside out.
For they re both in pain,
And she can do nothing.

Caitlin, you bring back vast memories of such a time of life for me with my daughter....I won't go into it....however, please, know that you are not alone, and that yes, you ARE doing everything you can, even if you don't think you are....

"She’s his rock, his strength,
Crumbling from the inside out.
For they’re both in pain,
And she can do nothing."

There is nothing more painful that not being able to take away his pain. I know, I've been there.

Thank you very much for your insightful comments. Despite being entirely selfish about the whole matter, it helps to know that people out there have to deal with this same situation as well. Thank you again.

We all need a rock at some point in our lives. Reminds me of holding my infant son when had a serious viral infection. Bless the rocks!!
