No one's particularly concerned
That black train is full speed ahead
Iron teeth barreling towards us
No breaks, whistles or lights
A real death trap
We march down the tracks towards it
Eyes wide open but fast asleep

Go about our lives
Work, play, and sex
As if nothing's wrong
The world is right…right?
Fighting, birthing, arguing our points
Because it matters, damn it
Need to be right, on top of things
In control, and in the thick of it

Interested more in who's first, second, third…
Checking out each others wrist watches, shoes
My kid's smarter than yours is
While that metal cannon ball
Comes screaming down the hill
And all bloody hell breaks loose

There is a legend
Of a Train Jumper who woke up
In the nick of time
And tried to wake the others
Get them the hell off the tracks
He managed to save a few
Who went on to save many
They say he died trying

Now and again
The Train Jumper tugs at my sleeve
Only then do I see that metal monster
Just inches from my nose
Ready to explode
I wake up and step off the tracks
Feel it's hot breath sucking my back
The Train Jumper keeps walking
And doesn't look back

This is a very apt description of a textbook nightmare---one that still visits me too.

I have been late in my Welcomes, so let me welcome you now! Enjoyed muchly. OH..and loved the "train jumper" reference too.

This is outstanding writing. My highest compliments, for you have written truth.

I shall save this in my library and will reread it many times.

After years of searching, I have found I am nothing more, nothing less...I am in truth Just A Woman after all.

Hi Everyone...thanks for the great comments! In this piece I was comparing sleep walking head on to a train, with the way we live our lives...meaning that we go about our daily lives thinking things are so important but losing sight that we are all dying...we are all mortal...we are all sleep walking head on to a train. The single most important event of our lives is rushing towards us (or we are rushing towards it), and few people spend the time contemplating it's meaning...or even waking up to contemplate it's meaning. The Train Jumper, was a metaphor for a enlightened person, who wakes people up from this slumber to see the larger picture, and ask the important questions.

...your comments really make my day...Thanx!

From a "Train Jumper" what an excellent piece of writing Russ...I got off the track two years ago and never looked back! I embrace every breath, every snowflake, for it but happens once on this plain. Excellent work, just excellent!

Wonderful vivid imagination! What a difference waking from a sleepwalk makes! Get off those tracks just in time to miss what should have been dealt with or be prepared by not sleepwalking into it! That's usually the spot where I try to move and I can't then I wake up....great writing and welcome to Passions!

The poet is like a cocoon; in him the caterpillar of the past finds rest, and from him the butterfly of the future emerges.
