Three years ago today, my mother died and began her new life of peace and surely joy. I wrote this last year. So now, if written today, it would begin, three years ago, today...

Her Last Moments
to commemorate my mother’s last hours
Virginia Salter

two years ago, today, we spent our last hours together
she, most assuredly, only fully aware of her pain
fading, breathing, laboriously, heart beating, as it ticked away her last moments,
though I knew not how close they had come

at her side, watching, giving water, pureed fruit
trying with all of MY might to stay this execution
praying, waiting, clinging to her life with useless, feeble fingers
each time I’d move her, she would cry out in anger
blaspheming my efforts, screaming disdain

then moments of peace as I sang my love songs
along with the messages on a tape of her choosing
hearing those words as they flowed in and through me
grasping their message and indwelling for her

mid-afternoon arrived as her best friend joined us
loving, caressing her life and its worth
waiting and weeping in sorrow we watched as she neared her moment of birth
into her new time, time eternal she went forth
when the evening was barely, for us, underway

eight-thirty-two, the time of her passing
our good-byes so feeble they lay on her head
could they have entered the realm of her going
could she have known how sadly they were said

How very poignant this was. How sad it can be when loved ones are called home and we wonder if our words were understood. Blessings to you, Kate
