My heart is beating very fast
Will I be the one who is chosen last?
I hear my name and join the three,
Who have been favored over me.

I watch those standing yet in line
And see their fear as strong as mine.
Their fate unknown, they mutely stand
And pray to join our little band.

At last one girl stands there alone.
Her face is flushed, her chances blown.
And as her tears she strives to hide,
I know full well she would have died,

Rather than to be left standing there,
For everyone to taunt and stare.
I know how it is, I've filled her shoes,
The girl that neither side would choose.

Welcome to Passions
Very sad reflection you've penned
they say children can be the cruellest
I remember these childhood games ... to be the last chosen was just terrible
Nicely written

Joyce~
Welcome to our family of Passionate Poets.
You will enjoy your stay here.
Look around, read lots - reply to the poetry of others ...
and in general ... settle down and make yourself at home.

Your piece is reflective of the insecurities of lots of kids who have been through the tortuous moments of not being chosen.
Nice write.

Dear Joyce:
I am so happy to see you here Joyce. I was hoping you would join. I am glad you posted this one. It tells so much about the anguish of childhood, for those who were less popular than most. Looking forward to reading more of your work and I think you'll love it here!

I made sure that when I substitued for school that the one who was always the last to be picked got to be one of the captains of the game. I knew what it felt to be last.

This brought a sadness to me, remembering how cruel and aweful that can be. Very well written.

very well expressed...the social dynamics of cliques that dictate who gets to be included or excluded really suck...

i hence wonder why am i so eager to please, so as to be included as one of the "gang"?

this was thought-provoking..and joyce, welcome to passions

It's not accidental that the only sports I didn't despise in school were those that could be pursued individually... for team sports inevitably led to that "left behind" feeling. *S* (Little did they know what imaginary targets made me so accurate in archery! LOL) This is great... Welcome to Passions!!!
