~Reflected Love~

She asked me, "If you love him ...
then how can you still let him go?"
So I told her, "Sometimes love needs more ...
and holding on too tight wont allow the heart to grow."

"But I've seen the way you look at him,
and I've seen the changes this love has made in you.
How can you be sure that when you let go of him ...
you wont be giving away too much of you like you always do?"

So I tried to make her understand,
sometimes we don't have a right to hold on to one another.
There are times when love can hold us too close,
and if a heart isn't free, in time the love will smother.

Then I reminded her I learned a long time ago,
that love doesn't always come with "happily ever after" endings.
Sometimes the price of love is too high,
the cost is more than the heart has saved away for rainy day spending.

Still she protested, "How can you just let him go to her?
What happened to your belief of things meant to be?
All your rhymes and verses of poetry ...
All your dreams of fate and destiny?"

And as I smiled at my own reflections question,
I said, "Don't you see?" ...
"Because some where along the line ...
I learned to love him ... more than I love me."

Wow! What a piece. That last stanza the most important for sure. There are certainly some circumstances that this truly fits for. Might I copy and share it with someone I know?

Wow Janny girl...this made a lump form in
the back of my throat...the last line is
killer and the way you have lead up to it in
this poem...I can imagine sitting over two
glasses of raspberry tea....and poptarts chatting....
You've taught me through time that self
sacrifice is really no sacrifice at all when
we love someone...even if the decisions hurt
us or even hurt them at the time...in the
long run we know we are doing the right
thing for them...loving the other more than
ourselves adds another set of colors to the
already beautiful wings that you are adorned
with my sweet SS.
The inspiration for this one shines in every
line as does the love, heart and soul that
it took to write it...love it when you weave
baby..no one can touch your talent when you
spin it from your heart. Love you girlie!!

JM,
The truths that you mention are what real love is all about. And knowing that you know it, is why WE love you so much, that is Randy and me. Of course we are a little jealous but we will get over that. Your poem is delicious. Love ya Winkiewinkie Stinky.

That last stanza is a real heart ripper!!! I also loved the way you set this whole thing up...reflecting in a mirror...soul searching...self actualization. I suppose the "perfect" relationship has both partners loving the other more than they love themselves. With that in mind, your poem is heart wrenchingly sad, beautiful and inspiring...all at the same time.

I didn't know where this was going... but I knew I was answering "How can I not?" to every question. So I wasn't surprised when I got to the end... you've written my heart too well before. *S*

This is incredibly beautiful, JM... as is a love that truly puts the other person first and rejoices in that person's happiness even when they can only share from a distance. This touches me deeply... and is, of course, written with a pen that knows only perfection. *S*

janet-

sorry late in responding--this is just
exceptional and beautiful writing my
friend!! just when i think i have read
the best by you, i am proven wrong
you write your heart and soul with this,
and i echo all the others...you are
wise dear sweet friend of mine...not
only are you wise--you are selfless...
to put one before ourself is what true
love is all about...though most of us
can't do it. i envy you, but then again
i always have. hopefully someday i'll be
1/2 the woman and poet that you are!
fly on sweet butterfly--you have earned
those beautiful wings of yours and more!

love ya

Oh that last line is sooooo gooood!! Your wonderful poet's heart is glowing in this one my dear poet pet....I've always wondered why I would want to hold on to someone who wanted to be free for whatever reason. This is a great story.....like you can do soooo well! I love it.......

When our first love was blind and new
we rambled under golden skies.
We never needed others girl
with our true hearts standing by.
But for better or worse sometimes fails
in the promise of those fairy tales.
A wisp of smoke rises up in flight
when a loving fire dies.

So beautiful was our gracious time
but worn out visions are never kind.
Time runs over it's waterfalls
where tired old hearts all disolve
and mind weary goals fall off the scales
outside the land of fairy tales.
A wisp of smoke rises up in flight
when a loving fire dies.

Oh, these times they're changing fast
and those old flames don't seem to last.
But trapped inside there's another us
shining somewhere behind the rust.
So when we see old memories fade
and that wisp of smoke blows away
the soul moves on through the nights
until a loving fire lights.

Just something I wrote from a farther away perspective...as my time away from that love is longer than yours..... keep up the good work......you're VANtastic!!

The poet is like a cocoon; in him the caterpillar of the past finds rest, and from him the butterfly of the future emerges.
