Sudden Death

Once, there were coveted Oaks
from valley to ocean;
flocks of magpies
argued with pesky Scrub Jays,
pairs of Northern Flickers,
with cinnamon faces
and black crescent necks
foraged for ants;
and all the plant eaters
fed on acorns
that fell
in winter and fall.

Falcons favored treetops for nests,
and below, beneath far reaching boughs -
were cool places to rest;
Gray Squirrels played -
defending the fort,
flying without wings.

What was it about that Spring -
that brought death
so suddenly?

It hid within the raindrops,
a confluence of destruction
swiftly moving.

Corinne...I've never read about acid rain that it chilled me so thoroughly...

Corinne, now this is cutting. The sweetness of joy in nature wiped away by our touch.
Earth day must be getting closer. Great write sweet poet.

Corinne,

Your talent is amazing, I just returned from 4 days and have an entire new outlook on life.
How about that Irish Challenge, you know March 17 is coming up.........

Thank you, Sunshine. This is about a syndrome called Sudden Black Oak Death that
is killing off Northern California's Oak trees, sad, isn't it?

Parker, thank you, yes, earth day must be right around the corner!

Kathleen, okay, you're on - will you start it? (And thanks!)
