Listening to every heart

The Blanket

Take here now this thread of fine wool
far across from the land of Ire,
then take a strand from cotton’s boll
spun well for strength’s desire.

Add to it the touch of silk so fine
spun well from nature’s own weave
then take all ancestors memories from mind
and thread a story of passion, to believe

that this blanket of woven threads
from all across those great lands
could hold stories of reverence, led
by open hearts, and open hands.

Keep weaving the threads of silk and wool
and make sure the cotton is there
so that during times when nights turn cool
you may wrap up in memory's care.

Then don’t forget to add poetry’s wine
to the stories that wrap your arms;
poetry ‘tis a lover’s song so fine
and will clasp you with melody’s charm.

Take not this blanket and store it away
from daylight nor lonely night’s gloom
but keep it out for all to see;
why, weave one for every room.

For my rooms are many, and I’ve many more
and blankets like this are at their core;
I’ll shall wrap you thus, and many others
in these stories of your sisters and brothers.

I love you, my child. Signed, God.

In memory of my father, 1923-1988

If I whisper, will you listen?...
I would rather be silent and write, than speak loudly and be bound.
