Sigh ... my muse stayed on vacation without me. I don't think I've posted this one though. I wrote it about 4 years ago for a young man who was acting out a lot ... afraid to let anyone close.

Open Your Heart

It seems at times I feel confused, or sometimes just depressed,
I take some time to contemplate, and ponder what is best;
And very often what I find, is when I write it out,
With rhyming words, it helps me to eliminate my doubt.

You see, I think you're special … you've got many qualities,
You're smart and quick, and "on the ball", and that I truly see;
When you are in the mood to be a sweet and caring child,
You truly shine, and we all see your "deep-down" caring side.

I guess I get confused at times, when briefly that will change,
For then I see another side … of anger, hurt and pain;
I cannot take away whatever anger is within,
But when I see it surface through your words or actions then …

I'd like to help you peel away that mask of hurt and doubt,
For though you may not realize, just what it's all about,
I guess I'd like for you to know I think you're special too,
But caring is a two-way street, and always that is true.

The hitch in life, I've always found when making a new friend,
Is that your trust begins out whole; one hundred full percent;
And only through our actions, can that trust be lost in time,
Just tiny little actions tend to lesson something fine.

Respect for other's feelings, is the key to what endears
Your heart to parents, uncles, aunts, your friends and all your peers;
For when respect is given, it is taken back in kind,
And only then can friendship grow and last for endless time.

Each person has relationships with everyone they meet,
No two are ever just the same, for each one is unique;
It's up to each of us to make that friendship grow and thrive,
For without nurturing and care, it simply can't survive.

The more you push away the ones who care to share your heart,
Just makes it tougher next time when you wish to be a part;
Don't punish those who care for you by pushing them astray,
With hurtful words or actions that will shelter you away.

For someday you may wish you had someone to lend a hand,
And if you choose to let me care … I will be there, my friend.

Kit I am always eager to read your words of wisdom and caring. This is certainly very good advise for all of us to live by, let alone someone "troubled". Thank you.

Kit there's so much wisdom and common sense combined in this wonderful poem... So kind of you to observe all these things and write them for this young man. Like you say it ends up coming down to the individual and how they work at their imperfections and how they eventually treat others......these kind words here are merely a stimulant for the heart of the other person...if they help it's all worth it! I like the warning at the end.....one could end up all alone with no friends to lend a helping hand...and that would be terrible!! Great stuff!!

The poet is like a cocoon; in him the caterpillar of the past finds rest, and from him the butterfly of the future emerges.

What a lovely poem! What you say is so true! Trust is so very important...without it a true relationship does not exist.

Kit, this is a beautiful expression of the great caring heart that you have. Thanks for posting.

Kit--If each child had someone with the wisdom and gentle guidance that you have shown to this young man...then the world would be a better place.

~Melton: That was so lovely Melton, thank you so very much for the kind words!

~Ethome: Thanks for the wonderful comment Ethome! It's amazing how frustrating it is watching someone who wants to be such a part of things, and yet does everything opposite to ingratiate themselves ... sigh. It was difficult to watch, which is why I wrote it and did give it to him. A day before he said he "wished I was dead" and I'd about had it. After the poem I got a big hug and quite an improvement in attitude. Sometimes it works out ...

~Sandra: It's so good to see you "here" Sandra, and thank you so much for the lovely comment, welcome again!

~Kathleen: Thanks so much Kathleen, I really appreciate your thoughts!

~SEA: Thank you SEA ... I'm glad you enjoyed, much appreciation!

~Karilea: It's always worth a try Karilea ... so often, the rewards are so very worth the extra efforts, thank you!

~Erica:*Smile* Thank you Erica ... I really appreciate you, you have a wonderful heart yourself my friend!

~Suthern: Thank you so much for enjoying Suthern ... I love your enthusiasm and your wonderful comments!

~Martie: If we all do it one child at a time ... what a wonderful world it would be. Thanks for the lovely thoughts Martie!

~Janet Marie: LOL ... Hey JM, I got a postcard from her the other day, and wondered who she was sitting with on the beach!!! Thanks for the smiles and kind words gator-gal, love ya!

~Rex: Thanks so much for the lovely comment Rex, I'm glad you enjoyed this one, very grateful neighbour!

Much appreciation to all,
/Kit

He is lucky to have you on his side. This was wonderful.

This is such a special poem. Everyone knows a person like this and it can be so difficult to deal with them, but to keep their good qualities in mind is the key and it could help in time. Very well done, Kit!
