“Silence on the Line”

I called last night from Denver, to check up on the kids-
I sure was glad to hear their doing fine.
The small talk came so easily, it brought back those old memories
I sure am glad that you’re a friend of mine.

We talked about my winnings, my low place in the standings...
The laughter helps to keep us both from cryin’.
I said that after Dallas, I’d like to stop and visit-
But all I heard was silence on the line.

There was silence on the line, and I guess I understand-
I guess there’ really nothing left to say...
I had your heart one time, but I chose the rodeo-
I had it the world, and threw it all away.

The silence soon grew awkward, you said you had to go-
It almost sounded like you might be cryin’-
It was prob’ly just the phone, a “click” and you were gone-
And I was left with silence on the line.

There was silence on the line, I guess I understand.
I guess we’ve really nothing left to say.
I had your love one time, but I chose the open road...
I had the world and threw it all away.

As a child I grew up around rodeos.
One brother rode broncos, the other
bulls. I was always glad when they
came home in one piece. So glad that
I don't have to share my man with the
rodeo.
It seems to be a lonesome life.

Another well spun, sad ballad, dear Troubadour. Thanks for it.

Yes I know the feelings that come with frustration and disappointment...and finally we do not want to go there again...James
