I drove to the store with a burning need:
I needed to buy left-of-center seeds!
Without them I couldn’t write quirky odes;
I’d end up in the mainstream, among other dark roads.
Now why would I consciously try to think weird?
I don’t! That’s why the seeds are so feared.
Think about it for a moment, that line will make sense.
But if not, that’s okay. My excuse is pretense.

The seeds come in a bag that glows blue and green.
You plant them in the ground as you would long string beans.
You need to hoe them regularly, and tend them with care.
Otherwise the left-of-center plants will never appear!
I knew I was on the right track when my spade hit a skull,
which cracked open to reveal flowers gone dull
because the brain inside had hardly ever been used.
“Rather be safe than sorry”; the typical line of the snoozed.

Maybe once you wanted to prove you had smarts.
Maybe once your words were pointed, poisonous darts.
Maybe once the love scenes were crafted to hurt.
Now they’re as boring as small talk when you flirt.
Money is the left-of-center plant’s only weed;
Frankly, being adored is a deadly type of need.
Because then you’ll be afraid to lose all your fans,
so you’ll play with dry mulch and give up your plans.

The left-of-center plant never conforms.
The left-of center plant never reforms.
The left-of-center plant never condones.
The left-of-center plant never calls home.
The left-of-center plant isn’t afraid of bad rimes.
The left-of-center plant makes them all the time.
Now through the skull’s eyes the plant thankfully grows.
I’m giving you vision; so you can finally know.

I enjoyed this a lot. Although, I think it's for savvy children that are chronologically adult. Heh-heh. I was born in California, but I've been so long from there, I'm sure I'm an Oregonian by now.

This was a very fun read, playfully serious.
