Sweet Clarity

The patio is playing the music of rain
across the algae green of damp,
it drains in a whirlpool
and starts a stream
trickling through the grass,
onto the cement of alley river,
flowing to the gutter,
the river of a city.

And in warm listening I thank February
for air that presses down upon the mountains
and for the seeping in of thought,
like the song of wet cement,
a whales song,
surreal and yet potent with knowing
that a drop of rain is like seconds
falling into time.

In each down sky there is a beginning
waiting in the cold for spring,
even as the doorway’s droop of body
clasping itself
is somehow lulled by the music
that comes through the drain pipe
and explodes beyond his soggy wish.

The children burst forth from the fold,
their jumping feet alive with possibility,
and in their dash for opening doors
the laughter of a splash echoes
and wakes the heart
that February has taken,

wakes it and shakes it
and hangs it on this feeling,
where I can smell the sweet clarity
of the first of spring.

sweet thoughts of spring...
soon the flowers will be in full bloom here in Kansas,
but they already are in California...

Once more the breath of spring comes through Martie and the creative juices flow from the poets from the stream of human connection. This is a beautiful way to express yourself!

The poet is like a cocoon; in him the caterpillar of the past finds rest, and from him the butterfly of the future emerges.

Martie no one can make it sound quite the way you do. Never has rain sounded this good through my eyes. (if eyes could hear) LOL

It's been raining here as well, guess I'll just look at differently now.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and you've shared the beauty with me. Thanks!

What a good read for a rainy night. I'm listening to some of those sounds this very moment.

only you can make the mundane scenes of rain and algae come forth in beauty and hopefulness - = There's not a single Martie poem I don't save and treasure

Martie, wonderful write....

And in warm listening I thank February
for air that presses down upon the mountains
and for the seeping in of thought,
like the song of wet cement.....,

these lines among others were just fabulous.

Now cowboy is missing the southern part of CA really bad thanks to you. I almost forgot how beautiful it is there when days such as this kiss the horizon but you bring the memories back so vividly I almost can smell the rain kicking up the dust out there. Wonderful write my friend. So beautiful are your images and words in this masterpiece.
