Candles

by Michael Auguste

Candles in the rain are burning
and there is hush among the crowd.
The poet lies quite close to death.
One of his poems is read aloud.

Family and friends are gathered.
A vigil in this night they keep.
The poet still has poems to write,
but these he must write in his sleep.

And through this night a hand holds his.
The muse that stayed with him for years.
She holds his hand against her cheek
and it is bathed in her sweet tears.

His other hand is also held.
A muse that helped him with his art.
She softly kisses his tired hand,
for years they each fought for his heart.

And as he passes from this life,
his body once again feels whole.
The muses hold what's left of him.
They gently bear his precious soul.
