The Monster Within
By WhiteKnight

Pounding, aching, hurting, horror,
Darkness, night, fear, pain, then anger.
Hatred of this life, nothing left only strife.
Empty shell of a man, lives alone in his cell,
Lives alone with his wife and children,
Nothing left now only dust, dirt and horror.

He hears the screams at night,
He knows this is not right.
He no longer has the strength,
No longer can he stand,
No longer can he face the pain, the anger, the hate,
She throws at the gate.
The gate of his cell.

He placed himself here,
He built these walls, tried to defend,
His children and himself.
The walls cannot hold back the beast when she comes,
Cannot stop her, she doesn’t even slow,
He feels the blow, though not a physical force,
It knocks him from his feet.
She tramples over him as if he is not there,
It tears through the spirit as though it were his flesh,
It leaves his empty shell behind,
The shell that once was a man.

Onward forward faster yet,
It hurtles toward the little ones,
They cannot defend themselves yet.
The force takes out first one then two,
And turns towards the third,
More powerful than ever.
My son quivers in fear of the darkness,
In fear of the night,
She runs right over him
As though he’s not there,
She feeds upon his fright.

The fourth and last child stands tall,
For only he has the power to weaken the beast.
The force circles and circles in vain,
But cannot get past his innocence,
Cannot get past his youth,
She cannot penetrate past the protection,
Of those baby’s eyes.
He is her last the youngest,
Her baby, so she weakens in his stare,
Slowly looses her anger, hate and pain,
But the damage is done.

She looks around at the destruction,
She does not see the truth,
She blames them for this,
They brought out that monster within her,
They brought it upon themselves.
She blames him most of all,
He did not hold up the walls,
Did protect them from her,
He was not strong enough.

He lays there weak and battered,
Barley able to move,
Yet he crawls forward and picks up a brick,
He has to build a wall.
