its kind of long...but its straight from the heart...and I like it more than anything i have written in a long time.....so here goes
sigh

The Theft of A Smile

She raised her brush
to transcribe her life's masterpiece:
The Theft of A Smile

On her pallet she dabbed
a bit of this and a bit of that
mixing as she went along.
She knew she had to start
with the colors named Anger and Hate,
she had an over abundance of both and
they would only get in the way.
She blended them into many different shades
all of which she labeled You.
Punishing the canvas, repeatedly,
the brush saturated and frayed and
her painting ruined, she had no choice
but to start
anew.

She then delicately brushed
an unobtainable need for freedom
with a color she called
Broken Wings.

When sadness took her hostage
she mixed her paint with tears
and flooded her canvas with a color
she simply called Blue.

Those days when sunshine
was nowhere to be seen
she added in a self portrait with
a shade she called Despair and

that once...or was it more...
she created a paint that she
didn't want to remember and
detailed a desire for death
with a mixture called
I Wish I Wasn't Me.

The aroma of the paint was heavy
it knocked her to the floor
but she needed to go on
her painting was nearly
half way complete.
Reaching out she righted herself
in front of her easel, quickly
swirling A Refusal to Give In with
Somehow I Will Make This Right
calling it Rigid Resolve.

She united Love At First Sight
and Fire and fashioned one called
Passionate Dreams. Her brush poised
her canvas expanded, she expected
to paint the sky, but all too soon it bled
into the color of Love
Gone Wrong and she ended up with
a color she called
Goodbye.

She blended Broken Promises
and Lies into a color called Untrue
and for many days after that
she painted with a color that
no one could see.
When fellow artisans asked
for a description of this hue
she gave it the name Hopelessness;
and this
they understood.

And that day
when it finally got too heavy to carry
with just her own strength
she mixed up a special paint.
She wasn’t sure how, she took the mix on
faith, and it eased her soul to create one called
Leaning on a Higher Power.

She never finished her masterpiece
the paints proved too costly.
The blending of so many hues
she could no longer afford
so softly she set it aside.

These days she paints still life
in grayscale with a color
at first she couldn't identify.
But each time she painted with it,
it became easier to mix and soon
she had it memorized.
She longed to name it Comfortable
but for some reason
it didn't feel quite right
so she changed the ending
and called it Comfortably
Numb.

whata piece of writing-----

I've been doing fingerpainting -
feeling like a kid again...I love this

and the sun drips honey."

I recognized so many of these colors, but had never known their names... But in a poem that is stunning from beginning to end, this verse keeps claiming my attention. What a superb description of hopelessness... the invisible hue that colors our lives... WOW!

"But each time she painted with it,

Again... outstanding!! I don't have the words to tell you how much I like this one... but I think you know how much I wish for the day when Happiness covers your life canvas. *S*
