Just A Myth

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Once upon a time rarely ends as happy ever after
and glass slippers will shatter if you wear them,
there is no prince to kiss the sleep away from a beauty,
shooting stars do not deliver hopes to the heavens within the night,
poison of the heart always kills snow white,
there never was a man in the moon smiling down,
happiness does not live behind the painted mask of a clown,
he loves me, he loves me not seems to win time and time again,
thorns refuse to vanish and roses never bloom all year long,
if you believe that God creates soulmates -
then you've got it all wrong,
there is no genie in a bottle granting wishes
fairytales are just cruel jokes played on innocent children,
angel lullabies cease to float on honeyed clouds -
but rather sing off-key on polluted air,
even the chesire cat fails to grin forever -
his nine lives are cut off at the head by the evil queen,
there is no love potion that can cast a magical spell
the garden of eden will never replace hell,
crazy glue could not put humpty dumpty back together once more
maps to paradise never wash upon the shore,
when your heart breaks
and your soul aches
all of the chocolate in the world cannot save you from tears,
your knight and shining armour is down at the stripbar
not riding upon a white horse to carry you off into the sunset,
gold rings eventually tarnish
wedding gowns and memories will yellow and fade,
promises are hardly ever kept, let alone made,
romance is not a scripted Hollywood movie
dreams are never given for free,
destiny, fate and kismet are all a bunch of bull
the cup of life is half empty, never half full,
Saint Valentine and Cupid does not exist
lasting love is just a myth

Very sad, Melissa..without those things to believe in, even those improbable, the world is a much sadder place....

Melissa - I have to agree that many of these things are myths, including (sadly) the chocolate, and also agree that a diet of fairy tells sets us up for an unhappy ending, but I hope you will find that, even if there really aren't knights in shining armor, there are good and honest men who keep their promises, and there are real-world relationships that last forever, or as close as we can get to it. I can feel where this comes from, have been there and wish I had been able to write about it at the time. Feel better soon. hugs

I'm so sorry you are feeling this way.......the ache is so clear in your words.....bitter angry.......and it seems rightly so........but geeez.....to give up on the fairy tale, the hopes of love forever true.......is just so sad to me.......and what do you mean about the chocolate?! You're just kidding right?!

Here's hoping you write a new story, with a better ending.......... SEA

Michael, Marilyn and Sea - Thank you for reading this poem. I watched the movie "Ever After" with Drew Barrymore last night and I was just feeling sorry for myself and I had to pen this poem Thank you for your encouragement, hopefully someday there will be a happier ending in my life

Take care,
Melissa~
