A very strange experience occurred last week to me...
Re-union of my high school class of 1963.
It was so long since I'd been back I wasn't sure I'd know
A single, solitary face but I just had to go.

Nostalgic waves of reminisces flooded through my brain
Recalling all those care-free days of school and raising cane
In days still free of obligations, marriages and strife
Where only sports and pretty smiles composed a happy life.

So I went back to my old school and entered through the door
Excited to meet all the school chums I had known before.
I looked around the room, anticipation on my face
But didn't recognize one single person in the place!

There were so many bald heads there - so many horn-rimmed glasses,
So many dumpy matrons that had grown from comely lasses.
I tried so to relate to them but it was very hard.
I felt that I had walked into a geriatric ward!!

Those high school jocks that dunked the ball or scored touchdowns with ease
Now walked around with bellies that went half-way to their knees!
Those pretty faces I had kissed and loved so long ago
Now left me shaking with relief that they had told me no!

They spoke of operations and the troubles they'd been through
And vitamins and IRA's and "I've got more than you!"
Men tried to hold their stomachs in with belts that had no slack
And tried to dance the Twist in ways to not throw out their back.

Well, I got through it - don't know how - the name tags helped a lot.
They asked me if I'd come again in five years...I think not.
It was a good experience but, if the truth be told,
I've no desire to be with them - those guys are WAY TOO OLD!!!

Exactly, what would one who is so 'young at heart' do there all night? Listen to all that old fogied conversation definitely a no no. Yet, it is good you went and caught up and remember that special time in your life, brings new perspectives onto things, and new perspectives are usually wonderful...
And one more thing Balladeer you will NEVER be old!!!! *hugs*

An entertaining anecdote, Balladeer, cleverly told. You (and your poetry) still seem to be going strong, to my way of thinking. (o:

Being one of the odd kids out, I never did go to my class reunions ~ but then, I was never invited back either...however, I do go to others' reunions...and totally relate to what I've heard! One of these days I might crash my class reunion...

Oh C'mon Deer... Class reunions are TONS of FUN... I'd never miss one... We have a super duper time... Ten minutes saying hello to people I never hung out with before - and the rest of the time rockin' and rollin' with those who were really my friends... and we do ROCK... ...

Oh - The key to having fun at a reunion is simple... NEVER, EVER, bring along a date or a spouse unless they know everyone too... They can't relate...

Cute poem, Deer..

Balladeer I loved this one! Being 52 myself I can really relate to this ! I laughed all the way through.... you have such a way with clever humour filled lines that blend together so well. He he I don't blame ya who'd want to hang around with all those old farts anyway Great stuff! You made my day.....here's to all those places we still go where name tags aren't needed and memories are still fresh.....have a nice day!

I laughed so hard, Well witten! I have to read it to my friend, who's going to her 20 year re-union and is soooo worried about looks and all.

Balladeer,
Going back is not a good idea
For sure all those of yesteryear
It's very hard to get nose to nose.
Especially when yours is Cyrano's
Quick wit will get you half way through
But then you leave just feeling blue.
Excellent poem.

I went to one class reunion... and swore if I got out of there somewhat sane, I'd never attend another. *G* And my mirror tells me how old and awful I look... I sure don't want to disgust my pals from the past. *G* So if I ever feel my resolve weakening, I'll read this poem and stay home. *G* Staying home and reading poetry is more fun anyway! LOL Great job, Deer one!
