(2 Points of view)

I'd come home quietly
She was on the phone
No intention to listen
But amidst the babble
My name was mentioned

Embarrassed but curious
I settled in a chair
Where I was just out of sight
Prepared to flee if she moved

“So there we were at Nascar
I’ve no idea why I went
All that noise, all those fumes
I mean – we’d just come from
That soccer game last week”

“I admit I finally learned
what corner kicks were,
throw-ins, and yellow cards”

“I guess I’d gotten caught up
We did have fun, even when
The beer was spilled on my shoes”

I cringed with the memory
This was a surprise
And made a mental note
To take her shoe shopping

“So I’m looking at these cars,
gaudy colors, seemed the same
people screaming
and here he was explaining
Winston cup, and pit crews
And I got caught up in it?”

I was squirming in my chair
And was about to sneak
to the TV in the den
But she was quiet
and I feared being heard
I don’t know who she was
Listening to. I was petrified

“Well yes, he did do that.
…twice last week, I must have shopped
six hours each time.
He made sense, helped me select
the dress I needed for Mary’s
reception. Now I’m glad
I didn’t buy the puce”

I could feel my color
Spreading up from my toes
And almost relaxed
Then she said “You must go”
And I thought I’d be caught
But she hung up, moved quickly
To the bath, me to the Den

And I realized why
We stayed married

Great souls have wills; feeble ones have only wishes.

you make me smile with this Bill...
sincere and sweet...
yes...lifes little joys...
those little moments of quiet comfort...
thanks for letting us listen in as well.

you can't wrap your arms around a memory

youre the candle flame that flickers to life

Bill--Marriage is such a give and take of little things...and when they add up, they are what keep it going. This was a wonderful look at that.

Not what I expected, but more...and then I look to the poet's name, and think...

of course...

Love those little joys. You stay married because you care what you hear when eavesdropping, and get rewarded with something that makes the color spread. And you make me smile because you share it.

To love another person is to see the face of God.

Martie - Hope - Karilea - Marilyn-

This is total fiction - It came out of more arguments and fights than from any real events - nonetheless - I figured - if just one or 2 of us recognized ourselves in these actions (or part of them) and resolved to be better because... the piece would be worth posting. Thank you

I'm glad you made that little comment at the first Bill...I really got the two points of view clearly after reading....It's life's little joys alright and the passing of time affects all things....well done Bill! like you always do!

The poet is like a cocoon; in him the caterpillar of the past finds rest, and from him the butterfly of the future emerges.

Wil,
life passes, time changes things and it's the little things we remember most. *SiGH!*
