Double Standard
Virginia Salter

a little girl of seven
or maybe she was eight
they took her into the trees
and emblazoned well the date

the boys were eight or nine
and curious as toads
they fought to cross the line that day
beside the country roads

then she went home
as did her brother, too
he told their mom all about
what she’d let those little boys do

“But, Mama,” she cried
between the lashings of the whip
“he did it, too!”
“I wouldn’t doubt it,“ was her quip.

it seemed that she, like Eve,
was the one to have sinned
not the boy, who’d done the same
for that was the trait of men

the years moved on and other times
there were boys that tried the same
but she kept her legs quite tightly tied
for no one else to claim

as she grew into a woman
she remained fully chaste
intent she’d not give herself
to one who’d be a waste

pure and clean she counted herself
when she had met her ‘king’
she trothed her love, her lasting love
to the man who gave the ring

for all of life she vowed to give
her emblem of undying love
he said “I do,” yes, he promised, too,
to man and God above

many years their love did grow
or did it really wane
the passages his soul did take
saw it’d never be the same

now she lives alone
in her heart and in her house
she thought she’d married a wonderful man
but he must have been a mouse

Well now that's so sad but so in touch with reality...these things unfortunately happen and they hurt all people and all respond to it in different ways....however, I notice that there are so many who have taken back control of their lives and decided as mature adults that they would learn from their experiences and make sure that the ones they love don't have to go through the same things. To me, this is not the way it should start out but it ends up being growth toward cultivating a deeper appreciation for stronger morals....other than that every relationship ends up being a gamble of sorts. It's just life that we hear about all of the break ups and never about the relationships that last for years...kind of like plane crashes, a real big deal! never do we talk about all the successful flights or the near misses......this is a very thought provoking poem you have written that's why I am going on so....good work!

The poet is like a cocoon; in him the caterpillar of the past finds rest, and from him the butterfly of the future emerges.

do you suppose then that pain touches so many more nerve endings than joy?

thank you for your lengthy comment...I feel blessed you read this lengthy piece

Does for sure but it's not the way it's supposed to be.....who wants to spend a life full of pain...that's why the positive nature of the human being takes over and develops goals that pursue happiness....and that's what it's all about, having something to look forward to...goals toward happiness....thanks for the poem I enjoyed the content so much!

VAS, I think I , and I can't think or speek for others, feel and remember pain the longest. I have no idea why this should be because I look for love and its wonderful feelings more often. I know of what you remember at the begining of the poem. Those feelings never go away ME
